Prairie College Unaffected by Cases of COVID-19, Monitoring Closely

Responding to the COVID-19 Outbreak

Dear Prairie Community,

As the news of the COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) cases impacting Albertans continues to increase, we are closely monitoring the situation and preparing an institutional response in the likelihood that the virus will affect the school community.

Provincial & Community Outlook

As of this update, there are no cases at Prairie College, with 23 cases and zero deaths reported in the province overall.

According to Alberta Health Services, “the worldwide risk is rising, the risk of contracting COVID-19 in Alberta is still low.”

However, all large gatherings of 250 people or more are recommended to be cancelled and the government is advising Albertans to avoid travel outside the country

We will continue to work closely with our partners at Alberta Health Services to monitor and manage the COVID-19 outbreak within our community.

Institutional Response

Although there are no known cases on-campus, we are taking steps to prevent transmission at Prairie, which includes consideration of:

  •   A transition to online classrooms
  •   Institutional response if a proportion of the community falls ill and requires isolation
  •   Increased campus sanitation
  •   Evaluating College-related travel

Read the Frequently Asked Questions below for more details.

Taking Care of Each Other

This is a situation that affects us all. Please take care of each other. Even if in isolation, watch out for those who may be marginalized by this unfolding situation both locally and globally. Know that there are school resources available if you are struggling with mental health and other issues.

With prayer, we will continue our mandate to provide education to our students to the greatest extent possible.

As a school community, now maybe more than ever, we are acutely aware of our dependence on Christ. Please continue to cast these cares on Him. Even now as the uncertainty and anxiety loom –He is in control and we can trust Him.

Continue to monitor our COVID-19 page as we’ll provide regular updates. If you require assistance during business hours, please call 403-443-3030. If you require emergency medical assistance, please call 911.

With love and care,

Mark Maxwell, President

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have symptoms, stay at home and call Health Link 811 for instructions.

From Alberta Health Services:

“If you are returning to Alberta from outside of Canada, please monitor your health and, if you experience symptoms, self-isolate immediately and call Health Link at 811. Do not visit long-term care facilities if you are sick with a fever or cough. All Albertans should practice good hygiene, including washing their hands regularly and avoiding touching their face and eyes.

Develop a plan for what might need to change if you and your loved ones need to stay home for two weeks. Talk with your neighbours and friends to see how you can support each other if any of you are in this situation.”

Currently no classes are cancelled; however, campus leaders and faculty are working together to transition to remote learning if necessary.  Students can expect to hear from faculty about plans for continuation of learning in class or otherwise as the situation unfolds.

  • Grandparents Day – March 15 -16, 2020 is cancelled.
  • Preview Day – April 4, 2020 – currently still planned until further notice.
  • On AHS recommendations, all large events scheduled for the forseeable future will be postponed or cancelled.

  •   Digital Media Ecuador Trip still planned until further notice.

Campus leaders will continue to evaluate the suspension of other official travel on Government of Canada recommendations in the coming days.

Personal Travel

Given the dynamic nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, we are recommending that students, faculty and staff who are planning international travel review AHS, Government of Canada, and airport guidelines for travel.

The facilities maintenance team will increase the frequency of its disinfection process in public spaces, which includes door handles, sinks and other high traffic areas.

Cleaning kiosks with supplies will be made available in public areas

Service teams, faculty, staff and students are encouraged to continue and increase the practice of cleaning private spaces including dormitories, offices, study spaces and classrooms.
