Born to missionary parents, Vernon grew up with a desire to serve God in Christian ministry. Trained as a musician at Prairie Bible Institute and later at the University of Alberta, he has taught music at Prairie since 1986. Over the years, his vision for fostering biblically and historically grounded worship in the church led to the development of a core of worship-related courses in the Prairie curriculum, and to doctoral studies at the Institute for Worship Studies, Orange Park, FL, where he completed the Doctor of Worship Studies program in 2011. He and his wife June have enjoyed forty years of married life.
Involvement at Prairie and in the Community
Vernon served for twenty-one years in the Fine Arts Department as a professor of piano, music history, ethnomusicology, and worship ministry. During these years, he twice served as chairman of the Fine Arts Department and coordinated Prairie’s ethnomusicology program from 1993 through 2003. From 2007 to 2010, he developed and coordinated the worship track of the B.A. Ministry program. In addition to his classroom teaching, Vernon trains and advises the chapel worship teams at Prairie. He serves in worship ministry at two churches in Three Hills and is a resource person for church worship programs. More than anything else, he enjoys sharing with his students his love for music of all kinds and his passion for authentic worship.
