James grew up as a ‘missionary kid’ in West Germany until his graduation from Black Forest Academy High School (1977). After that he spent a year at Capernwray Bible School in England, then attended Wheaton College for two years before completing a B.Ed degree, with a minor in history, at the University of Calgary. He took his first teaching position in 1983 at Prairie High School (PHS) in Three Hills where he taught Social Studies, German, Biblical Studies and English. James spent fifteen years at PHS, the last three as Principal. He also met and married Anne (also a teacher at PHS) while teaching there. From 1998 to 2000 James returned to the University of Calgary to earn an M.A. in History and began teaching at Prairie in the fall of 2000. In 2005 he was granted a three-year leave to work on a PhD in History at the University of Cambridge, which he completed in the spring of 2012. His dissertation, Saving Germany – North American Protestants and Christian Mission to West Germany, 1945 -1974, examined the nature and significance of Protestant missionary work in post-war Germany.
Besides his current research in the history of modern Christian mission James continues to work in the related fields of modern Evangelical Christianity, World Christianity, and Transnational History. Alongside his scholarly pursuits, he enjoys playing and coaching sports, particularly soccer, volleyball and alpine skiing. He also enjoys roasting his own coffee.
Involvement at Prairie and in the Community
In addition to his teaching duties James has served as a lay-reader and warden at St. Barnabas Church in Three Hills from 1984 until 2008. In 2009 he was ordained as an Anglican priest and since then has served as Priest-in-charge of St. Barnabas. He has also coached high school volleyball and club soccer.
