Practical Nursing: In Depth

After Graduation

This program has an excellent track record of preparing students well. In fact, 100% of graduates from the last five years passed the national examination. Graduates are prepared to provide high-quality nursing care in the areas of medical, surgical, pediatric, maternity, mental health, and geriatric care. Upon successful completion of the Practical Nurse Diploma program and the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE), graduates will be eligible for licensure with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

International Preceptorship

After completion of all other program requirements students are required to complete two preceptorships. Students may apply for an International Preceptorship to fulfill one of these preceptorships. Watch a video on Practical Nursing International Practicum.

Program Outcomes

  1. Help learners acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide safe, highly skilled, quality nursing care in hospitals, other health care agencies and in the community.
  2. Assist learners to be actively involved in their own learning, to realistically self-assess strengths, limitations and needs as they relate to meeting program expectations, and to collaboratively establish strategies that will affect appropriate change.
  3. Encourage learners to develop greater autonomy in the making of decisions related to meeting individualized learning needs while achieving the program standards of performance within the time frames provided.
  4. Prepare learners to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPRNE).

Transferability

Graduates may transfer into one of Prairie's 4-year programs. Those who have completed the Diploma in Ministry can earn the Bachelor of Marketplace Ministries degree with an additional 33 credits (11 courses). All but one of these courses are available via Prairie Distance Education. Please contact us for more information. Graduates may also complete a Bachelor of Nursing Program through Athabasca University.

If you have already completed college or university courses you may apply for transfer credit. Any nursing courses that were completed more than 3 years ago will not qualify. For complete details please contact the Admissions Office.

Costs

Variations in costs are dependent on scholarships, number of tuition credits taken and transfer credits.

The program fee, textbook fee, and graduation fee includes: exam courier costs, clinical travel, lab kits, blood pressure cuff, textbooks, uniform dress, and stethoscope. However, the fee does not include the PIC, Bow Valley College scrubs, shoes, watch, CPNRE fee, preceptorship travel/living costs or CPR course.

The cost of the International Preceptorship is not included in the tuition or program fees. Students will be assessed a one-time fee dependent on the cost of the specific preceptorship.

We get how important is to be prepared well for your career. Both as a nurse and also as a person. As a nurse myself, I know how much it matters to receive training that will not only help you acquire a job but also to excel in it once you are there.

Nursing Mid Banner

I knew I wanted to be in a Bible-centred environment as well as one where I could pursue my passion for nursing. We take it seriously—it’s not just a vocation. The majority of us feel that this is a call specifically to serve God and others.

It was amazing to attend a Christian college, not only to encourage me in my faith, but to get training that I can use to serve.
